چکیده

REID, V. E., AKD FRIEDKIN, M. 1973. Plasnzodizlfn bcrghci: Folic Acid Levels in Mouse Erythrocytes. Expcri~~cntal Purasifology 33, 424-428 (1973). Folate levels of parasitized whole blood increased over fourfold above noninfected controls based on microbiological assays with Lactobacillus casei. Most of this increase is attributed to oxidized forms of folate (mono, di, and triglutamates) and/or Ns-methyltetrahydropteroyl mono, di, and triglutamates. Assays with Pcdiococcus cerevisinc showed that levels of tetrahydro-forms of folate polyglutamates doubled during parasitization of mouse erythrocytes. The folate activity for Lactobacillus casei after conjugase treatment was about 1.5 times as high for infected as for uninfected blood. During the malarial infection there was more a change in the form of folate than in its overall level. INDEX DESCRIPTORS : Plasmodium bcrghei; Folic acid; Malaria ; Lactobacillus casei assays ; Pediococcus ccrevisiae assays ; Conjugase; Mice.

Rheumatoid factor-like IgM in Plasmodium berghei (Apicomplexa: Haemosporida) infections of BALB/c mice.

Groups of female BALB/c mice infected by intravenous injection with 50 erythrocytes containing Plasmodium berghei Vincke et Lips, 1948 were sacrificed on days 3 through 12 after infection. Rheumatoid factor-like IgM (RF-IgM) and parasite-specific IgG levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in serum specimens and in culture medium removed from spleen cell cultures established...

Antioxidant activity of the methanol stem bark extract of Uapaca togoensis (pax) in mice exposed to Plasmodium berghei NK65

Background & Aim: Oxidative stress has been linked to the development of systemic complications in malaria infection. Recent approaches in treatment of malaria suggest that the control of oxidative stress in infected patients may be of therapeutic advantage. The stem bark and leaves of Uapaca togoensis are used locally in the treatment of various disease...

Chloroquine encapsulated in malaria-infected erythrocyte-specific antibody-bearing liposomes effectively controls chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium berghei infections in mice.

The suitability of liposomes as drug carriers in the treatment of drug-resistant rodent malaria was examined after covalently attaching F(ab')2 fragments of a mouse monoclonal antibody (MAb), MAb F10, raised against the host cell membranes isolated from the Plasmodium berghei-infected mouse erythrocytes, to the liposome surface. The antibody-bearing liposomes thus formed specifically recognized...

A Stem Cell Strategy Identifies Glycophorin C as a Major Erythrocyte Receptor for the Rodent Malaria Parasite Plasmodium berghei

The clinical complications of malaria are caused by the parasite expansion in the blood. Invasion of erythrocytes is a complex process that depends on multiple receptor-ligand interactions. Identification of host receptors is paramount for fighting the disease as it could reveal new intervention targets, but the enucleated nature of erythrocytes makes genetic approaches impossible and many rece...

Plasmodium berghei: efficacy of 5-fluoroorotate in combination with commonly used antimalarial drugs in a mouse model.

Resistance to antimalarial antifolates necessitates a search for new antimetabolites targeting other enzymes of the folate metabolic pathway. In this study, 5-fluoroorotate (FOA), reported to be an inhibitor of thymidylate synthase, was assayed against Plasmodium berghei NK 65 in mice, with(out) an oral uridine supplement. FOA (2.5 and 5.0 mg/kg bw.) was tested alone, or in a double and triple ...
